Do they attack at random, and do they eat people?

More people can die in car accidents or drown in the sea than are eaten by sharks. Only 50 to 75 people are attacked by sharks each year. Only 5 to 10 of these are killed by sharks. Scientists belive that they attack people by mistake. Sharks might think we are somthing else like a seal. Sharks are also attracted to blood and splashing sounds. Sharks won't attack you if you stay still

because they are attracted to movement.

Like other wild animals sharks would rather avoid you. Sharks do not try to hunt people on purpose. Many people are scared of sharks, and it is important to be careful around them, but it should be remembered most sharks are small and harmless.
